Tribute & Message From The Family

Gloria Louise (Handyside) Mattson, 95, passed away peacefully, on June 4, 2017 knowing the love of her family was constant. She was pre-deceased by the love of her life, Robert Halen Mattson, in 1994; her brother, Ronald Handyside, her sister, Dorothy Austin, her parents Hugh and Eleanor Handyside, her great-granddaughter, Ellie Faith Mattson, and her best friend Geraldine McWhinney. She is survived by her loving sister, Shirley Snow of Gilford, NH.

Gloria was a devoted wife of 48 years, and the loving mother of four children, nine grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by her children and their spouses; Rodney and Beverly Mattson of Stratham, NH, Virginia Mattson and Keith Gagne of South Berwick, ME; Janice and Gary Thompson of Northfield, NH; and Joanne and Steven Piwowarski of Cumberland, ME. Grandchilden and spouses: Shane and Jen Mattson, Sonia and Steve Linteris, Seth and Kerry Mattson, Kristin Regis and Stephen Fryling, Craig and Jessica Regis, Mark and Kathy Thompson, Jill and Stephen Zapora, Sara Piwowarski and Joseph Piwowarski; Great-Grandchildren: Matthew and Amanda Linteris; Zachary and Caleb Mattson; Ty and Adison Regis; Ryan, Lena, Charlotte and Natalie Thompson; and Bennington and Logan Zapora.

Gloria was born on August 18, 1921 in Manchester, NH. She graduated from Central High School, Class of 1940. After graduating from high school, she worked at the New England Telephone Company, enjoyed traveling to Boston by train with her girlfriends, and had a four-year long-distance courtship with Bob during WWII.

Her unconditional love of family is what she lived for. She also loved the many family cats and dogs, watching birds and watching Ginny working in her gardens. Gloria was an avid reader, loved to play gin rummy and scrabble, and loved to dance and sing. She is remembered as an excellent cook who loved to feed her family and loved large family gatherings. She was thrilled to become a grandmother, and then, a great-grandmother.

During Bob’s retirement, they traveled together to many new places around the country to places such as Washington, DC, Pennsylvania, Florida, and many others. After Bob’s death she traveled with family to Hawaii and Florida and enjoyed her birthday celebrations with family at such places as Newfound Lake, Lake Wentworth and New Castle Commons.

Everyone who met Gloria knew she was one-of-a-kind as they came to know the loving, sweet woman always with a beautiful smile. She was beautiful in every respect.

The family would like to thank Carriage Hill Assisted Living staff for their care and support during this past year. They would also like to thank Wentworth-Douglass Hospital staff and Cornerstone VNA Hospice for their care and kindness during the last days of Gloria’s life.

Funeral Service will be conducted on Friday at 1:00 p.m. at Cate & Johnson Funeral Home, 573 Pine Street, corner of Harrison Street in Manchester. Burial will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Manchester.
