Tribute & Message From The Family

Herbert E. Hand, Jr., 76, a lifetime resident of Manchester and son of the late Herbert E. Hand Sr. and Josephine (Shea) Hand passed away peacefully at home, on Christmas Day, after three years of declining health.

In his youth, he was involved with the YMCA, attending camp and competing in soapbox derbies. He served as an altar boy for the St. Joseph and St. Pius X parishes and was active with the CYO program, where he met his future wife. He was a young entrepreneur, starting his own hot dog and refreshment stand at the Derryfield Country Club. He graduated from Bishop Bradley High School in 1959 and then attended Indiana Technical College in Fort Wayne. He served several years as President of the Cystic Fibrosis Chapter when it was an all-volunteer effort. Through the years, he had many varied interests including a well landscaped property, music, learning both piano and organ, bowling and golf leagues, especially enjoying his membership at the Concord Country Club, woodworking, square and ballroom dancing, puzzle making, cribbage and was always an avid reader.

As a spectator, he enjoyed following the New England sports teams and debating current events, leaving little ambiguity in his opinions. He especially enjoyed his trips abroad to Italy, Ireland and Scotland. His other indulgences were fresh fruit lemonade made with at least four lemons, Moxie, and all things Donald Duck! His biggest passion and love was his grandsons, Cameron and Brandon. He cherished times cheering for, supporting and talking with them to learn about their lives. His employment career was spent as a route salesman, working many years for the Canteen Corporation and retiring from Frito-Lay in 1997 after more than 25 years of service. He had a soft spot for cats and was seldom without one, leaving "Licorice" now without a master.

Surviving members are his wife Glenda (Duford) Hand, his son, Brian Michael Hand, two grandsons, Cameron Mitchell Hand and Brandon Lee Hand, all of Manchester, his brother, Bruce David Hand and his wife Maria of Bedford, and sister-in-law, Doreen Duford of Manchester. Nieces, Christina Prodanis and Alison Crineri of Manchester, nephew, Ian Hand of Newmarket and numerous cousins. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by two sons, David Aaron Hand in 1971 and Herbert Eredge Hand III in 1985, both from cystic fibrosis.

The Hand family would like to thank the VNA Home Hospice Team of Manchester for their assistance and care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Northern NE Chapter of Cystic Fibrosis at 114 Perimeter Road, Unit G + H, Nashua, NH 03063. Calling hours will be 8:00 to 9:30 am on Tuesday, January 2nd at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover St., Manchester, NH. A funeral mass at St. Pius X Church, Manchester, will begin at 10:00 am. Burial will follow in the family plot at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Bedford, NH.
