WWII veteran, Donald Chester Mitchell, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2017 at the age of 91. Don was born February 2, 1926 in Everett, Massachusetts. He was the son of Caleb Mitchell and Lillian (Sweetser).
Don attended Everett, Mass schools and Newton Trade School where he studied the printing business.
Don joined the Army in 1944 and was assigned to the Ernestine Koranda Army Hospital Ship. During WWII he traveled on the ship to England, France, Hawaii, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Japan.
After the war Don met his wife, Phyllis Milley at Glad Tidings Tabernacle Church in Everett, Mass. They married on Sept 20, 1947. He spent 40 years raising his family in Natick, Mass while he worked as a sales rep for the W.E. Andrews Company. Don and Phyllis retired to the Lakes Region City of Laconia, NH in 1988 where they lived for 26 years until he lost the love of his life, Phyllis in 2014.
Don is survived by his children, Don Mitchell of Bow, NH; and his wife, Michele (Bedard) Mitchell, Karen Rawley and her husband, Bruce, of Waleska, GA; Sharon White and her husband, Robert of Sterling, Mass., 4 grandchildren, Aaron Mitchell, Andrea Mitchell, Christopher Rawley, Jennifer White, and a great grandson, Jordan Griggs.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of Villa Crest Nursing & Retirement Home for the exceptional care they provided for their father.
A celebration of Donald's life with a graveside service followed by military honors is being held at the NH State Veteran's Cemetery Chapel, 110 DW Highway, in Boscawen on Wednesday, April 26 at 11 AM.
The Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium is assisting the family with arrangements.
