Obituary

Malcolm Wallace Higgins, 84, passed away at his home on February 5, 2018. Born in Mapleton, ME on November 15, 1933, he was the only son of the late Wallace and Lillian (Dow) Higgins.

Malcolm was raised in Mapleton, ME, where he lived until he started attending Gordon College in Boston, where he met his wife of 62 years, Ruth (Heggem) Higgins. He also attended Rutger's University, where he earned his Master's Degree. Malcolm spent his career in education, working as a High School English teacher for 33 years. Most of his career was spent at Bloomfield High School in Connecticut, where he both taught and was president of the Bloomfield Education Association, Chairperson of the English Dept., was a delegate to the NTA convention, and served as president of the Farmington Valley Babe Ruth League. He also taught in Maine and New Jersey. Throughout his career, Malcom was very active in youth sports and was a proud coach for basketball, track and little league. For 3 summers he was Director of the Suffield Country Club pool. He and his family were 26 years residents of East Granby.

After moving to New Hampshire, Malcolm was very active in the local community. He served as director of the Fitts Foundation Museum in Candia and was also a member of the Candia Heritage Commission and Candia Historical Society. He was also a volunteer at both Keystone Hall in Nashua and The Liberty House in Manchester.

Malcolm is survived by his wife, Ruth Higgins of Manchester; daughter Lois Pecora and her husband Wayne of Bonita Springs, FL; son Michael Higgins and his wife Nanette of Westfield, MA; son Stephen Higgins and wife Mary of Candia, NH; sister Esther Ward of Wilmington, DE; sister Jennie Jamieson and her husband Bill of Zelienople, PA; grandchildren Brian and Jason Pecora and Tommy Higgins; great grandchildren Ava and Zachary Pecora; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. In addition to his parents, Malcolm was predeceased by a sister, Phyllis Keirstead.

A Memorial Gathering will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 from 12pm-2pm at Phaneuf Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 243 Hanover Street, Manchester, NH. Family and friends are invited to attend. He will be laid to rest at Holbrook Cemetery in Candia, NH in the spring.
